The Candy Category is unique. There is no other category with as many manufacturers and sku's, and identifying the key item or segment that truly drives category growth can be like finding a needle in a haystack.
                        
Just when you feel you have a Category Management plan in place that will drive profits for the year, the Candy Category throws you a curve ball in the form of Valentine's Day, Easter, Halloween, and Christmas. The role of the category changes, the individual segments change, and the key items or segments that drive category sales in one season may not drive sales in another.
            
Elmer's, a leader in seasonal candy, recognizes that as the seasons change, so should a retailer's approach to the category. We assembled some of the top talent in the CPG industry to study the seasonal candy categories and identify the key steps our customers can take to maximize profits, increase market share, build consumer loyalty, and gain a competitive advantage in the marketplace. The result is Elmer's Seasonal Management Program (SMP), which slices IRI information in a way that allows candy buyers and category managers to make sound decisions with regard to assortment, pricing, promotion, placement, and supply.
       
            
Our results speak for themselves. Of the retailers that implemented SMP recommendations for Valentine's Day 2000, 100% had increases in the heart segment and 89% had increases equal to or greater than the 5.1% FDM gain in the Valentine Category. In contrast, of the retailers that chose not to implement the SMP recommendations, only 27% had increases in the heart segment and only 9% outpaced total FDM in the Valentine Category.  
       
As seasonal candy sales amount to about 45% of total yearly candy sales, the strength of a retailer's seasonal programs will significantly affect the bottom line for the year. Elmer's Seasonal Management Program provides the tools that can help the candy buyer and/or category manager achieve big dividends in the form of increased sales and high profits.
